A video shared of the 100th woman to go to space has become the subject of misogynistic comments online after Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin aerospace company shared footage of the astronaut.
Emily Calandrelli, an MIT engineer, said she was brought to tears by critics of the clip, which showed her floating upside down in zero gravity while she stared out at Earth from a window. It was not long before comments beneath the video were flooded with objectifying and sexual remarks.
‘It’s not an achievement being a woman, ‘a user wrote.
Another posted, ‘Would you consider yourself the hottest woman to ever go to space? Any other contenders?’
‘why she moaning I cannot unhear it’ one added.
Calandrelli said some sexualised her reaction to viewing the planet from space.
The incident led to Blue Origin taking down the original video from its social media accounts.
