The Scotland men’s national football team have qualified for their first major international tournament since 1998 as they overcame the odds to beat Serbia in a penalty shoot-out in Belgrade. With an on legged tie away from home in a tough stadium, many placed Scotland as underdogs and Serbia as firm favourites to advance to next summer’s scheduled championships.

After a cagey opening hour, Scotland struck first through Celtic forward Ryan Christie who guided a left-footed shot into the bottom corner to give the visitors the lead. The host struggled to break a resolute Scottish back 3 until the 90th minute when Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic leaped highest and headed home an equalizer from a resulting corner kick. As all the penalty takers were successful with one kick left, keeper David Marshall saved Alexandar Mitrovic’s shot to dramatically send Scotland through and end 22 years of heartbreak and agony.
